Athletics Day

Races, Throwing, Skipping, Jumping!

The children in Room 5 had an exciting sunny day on Thursday 3rd November, 2016. During the first block we participated in a series of fun activities based on athletic skills. Then we competed in running races. We are learning to hand over batons in a relay race just like they do in the Olympics! Special mention to:

  • J Junior Vagavao: 3rd place in the Year 1 Boys 50m race.
  • Samalia Fasavalu: 3rd place in the Year 1 Girls 50m race.
  • Room 5 Relay Team (Samiuela, Analiyah, Hezekiah, Lavinia): 3rd place in the NE and Year 1 relay race.
Fantastic effort everyone!  You are shining stars on the athletics field.

Manukau Sports

Athletics Skills

On Tuesday mornings we learn athletics skills like long jump, racing, and throwing. Our sessions with the Manukau Sports Team run for about 20 minutes. We are always puffed at the end! But we love it because we are moving with lots of energy and learning some important PE skills.

We are learning to sort shapes into groups

In Room 5 we are starting to name different shapes:
  • Circle
  • Oval
  • Square
  • Diamond
  • Pentagon
  • Hexagon
  • Rectangle

We are also learning to put shapes in groups based on things like:
  • How many corners or sides shapes have
  • The type of shape it is.

Here's some photos to show you what we've  been doing:

Feed The Need

We are very grateful for the food we received through Feed the Need.

As this initiative is now over for the year we have been writing thank you notes to show our gratitude. In class we used our alphabet and word cards to sound out new words like 'lunch', 'burrito', and 'yummy'. We had teacher help to copy down words like 'thank you'. We are continuing to learn to use finger spaces between our words as we write, and to keep our letters at a good size to fit on the lines in our exercise books.

The final day for Feed the Need lunches was 18.08.16. Thank you to those that put in all their effort and time to help us have delicious hot meals twice a week in our classroom. We are very grateful!

Patterns in Maths

Check out the latest Algebra learning that we've achieved in Room 5.

We have been pushing ourselves further with understanding and talking about patterns in our classroom.

We are looking at trickier patterns, and beginning to explain what is happening with the patterns using some basic maths words.

We are also starting to notice when a pattern isn't quite right, and what we need to do in order to fix it.

Maths in Room 5

We are learning to recognise, describe, carry on, and create patterns.

This helps us prepare for algebra in maths.

We have learned that:

- a pattern repeats itself (red, yellow, red, yellow, red, yellow....)
- we can carry on a pattern that has been started

We are beginning to create our own patterns, too.

More photos to follow...stay tuned!
